Commonwealth Day

I know this blog has readers from Commonwealth countries, so please tell me, did anyone know that today was Commonwealth Day?  Did you even know that there was an annual celebration of the Commonwealth?  Or that this year’s theme is “A Young Commonwealth”?  I learned all of this as I walked past Westminster Abbey last week.   The Abbey is hosting a multi-faith observance for Commonwealth Day.

Commonwealth flags are flying all round Westminster. Facing the Houses of Parliament are the flags of British Overseas Territories like Bermuda, the British Antarctic Territory, the British Indian Ocean Territory and the Cayman Islands.

Horseguards Road is lined with flags from Commonwealth nations, with the country names printed on the flagpoles, so I know that this golden frigate bird is flying on the flag of Kiribati.

I didn’t need to read the label to identify this one.  Happy Commonwealth Day to readers in India!

  1. Yes, yes and yes. Did you know it’s a bank holiday here in Gibraltar?

No, I didn’t know that. Enjoy the holiday, and the fact that the Gibraltar flag is flying in Parliament Square.

Once upon a time, Fiji’s flag would have been there. Now there is a contest to help contribute to the design of a NEW Fiji flag – I never realized this might be related to the former holiday of “Commonwealth Day”

Go on – enter the contest.

  3. Well… check it out! Happy Commonwealth Day from my Canadian half and Indian half to your British self! 🙂
