I know this blog has readers from Commonwealth countries, so please tell me, did anyone know that today was Commonwealth Day? Did you even know that there was an annual celebration of the Commonwealth? Or that this year’s theme is “A Young Commonwealth”? I learned all of this as I walked past Westminster Abbey last week. The Abbey is hosting a multi-faith observance for Commonwealth Day.
Commonwealth flags are flying all round Westminster. Facing the Houses of Parliament are the flags of British Overseas Territories like Bermuda, the British Antarctic Territory, the British Indian Ocean Territory and the Cayman Islands.
Horseguards Road is lined with flags from Commonwealth nations, with the country names printed on the flagpoles, so I know that this golden frigate bird is flying on the flag of Kiribati.
I didn’t need to read the label to identify this one. Happy Commonwealth Day to readers in India!
